'
Experiencing natural and wild places is central to the work I make. Water has been an inspiration for many years: the sea, estuaries, rivers, canals, water and its contents.
I am interested in collecting imagery from across any watery landscapes. Foraging, rooting around and finding what is there and in the water.
I first began to use microscopes and collect water samples during a residency in Morecombe Bay in 2004. This work continued into a residency in County Mayo, Ireland and then in Venice in 2015 where I extended my work within the Department of Micrology at Venice University. I spent time researching water samples from the canals there.
I often use a microscope to observe water samples and make direct drawings into my sketchbooks as a starting point for further work. I am excited by the art and science crossover.'
Looking through the microscope at my water droplet samples, I am amazed by the transient and changing nature of what I see. Minute threads of weed and microscopic animal life, coming in and out of focus. The art work I make is a reflection of this exploration and each series of prints is named after a part of Venice where the water samples were collected.
