Product description
These works using re-claimed materials and found objects are inspired by the poem by Tom Gun -
Considering the Snail
The snail pushes through a green
night, for the grass is heavy
with water and meets over
the bright path he makes, where rain
has darkened the earth’s dark. He
moves in a wood of desire,
pale antlers barely stirring
as he hunts. I cannot tell
what power is at work, drenched there
with purpose, knowing nothing.
What is a snail’s fury? All
I think is that if later
I parted the blades above
the tunnel and saw the thin
trail of broken white across
litter, I would never have
imagined the slow passion
to that deliberate progress.
Background Information about Louise Garland
The work of Louise Garland engages with philosophical beliefs in the continuum of life. It examines the nature of our existence, linking the personal with the metaphysical (especially from a female standpoint). Her work frequently references the collective notions of archaic symbolism and almost always incorporates found materials and objects into each piece.
Her works are rigorously composed through the use of measurement, employing geometry and mathematical calculations often sourced from nature. Garland presents us with thought provoking, emotional and sometimes witty configurations of both our immediate existence, our self-constructed histories and our greater consciousness.
