Don and Jacky Bennett are ceramicists inspired by the long standing tradition of rustic English / Welsh slipware, a skilled yet informal, often rustic, genre of pottery. Their surroundings in Machynlleth, Wales, where they have a thriving studio pottery, are a rich source of their narrative approach.

Slipware uses semiliquid clay and water covering the whole earthenware vessel before firing.(900-110c), often of a contrasting colour to the body. Pattern is then incised through the slip, revealing the different body colour beneath. Sometimes the slip is used as in painting, ideal for figurative motifs and calligraphic decoration, giving freedom of expression and imagination.
