A Solo Exhibition

Celebrating his 70th year, Todmorden artist Barry Cook presents a vibrant solo exhibition inspired by Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Colorful mixed media paintings and 3D works fill Water Street Gallery with energy and imagination.
Explore scenes like the bustling marketplace, the Ox Cart, the Great Gate of Kiev, and Baba Yaga’s bizarre chicken-legged clock. Barry’s art captures vivid characters, rich settings, and the mythical essence of Poland, Paris, Rome, and Russia. Atmospheric, amusing, and occasionally unsettling—this is narrative art at its finest.

This is an exhibition that rewards both the casual viewer and the consummate art enthusiast. Each piece feels like an invitation— to witness not just the surface and subject of each work, but the artist’s inner world, unfolding layer by layer. Exploring a wide range of media transformed into drawing, painting, original prints, innovative 3D works.- It is clear that his atmospheric charcoal has a language of its own, masterfully focusing on the power of darkness and light.

Engagement with colour through a series focused the Rochdale Canal in Todmorden as well as other familiar locations will certainly lift the spirits in this fine exhibition.

For our 2025 OPEN EXHIBITION, we invite artists to explore the inspirational theme of home. From the comfort and beauty of houses—both historic and modern—to the challenges that make the ideal of shelter elusive, this concept opens doors to creativity and reflection.

What makes a home? Whether it’s for humans, animals, or birds, this multidimensional theme welcomes interpretations across painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and more. Artists’ studios are their homes too, and we hope architects, designers, and those with a playful perspective will join the conversation.
