Ann Bates
The joy of working with clay experienced at evening classes led on to a 1st class (Hons) University of Derby.
A deep interest in Neolithic rituals and ceremonies, of ancient clay vessels found in archeological sites and barrows forms the bedrock of much of Bate's working practice and output.
Each one is unique and often textured with seeds, shells, tree bark or leaves and there is always an impressed spiral, the natural form of growth and symbol of everlasting life, somewhere on every piece and markings are currently incorporated into her vessels and boxes.
