    Our Earth | 5 Sept - 27 October

    A Mixed photography Exhhibition
     
     
    Our first exhibition focused entirely on photography comes at a time of great global urgency ‘Our Earth’ - being faced with a full on climate crisis urging us to look anew at Our Earth - whether by land, sea or air. We challenged photographers to apply their technical and artistic skills, capturing images of our changing and beautiful, and sometime devastated landscape. Of the 10 participating artist most have opted to celebrate the beauty of our land and sea, sometimes underpinned with disquiet. The trained eye and understanding of the possibilities of photography is apparent throughout this exhibition of over 80 photographs.

    An exploration of the earliest forms of pinhole photography by Jane Keeping, while Kristell Collison uses the polaroid cameral (1948) being particularly drawn to fragile, neglected and often overlooked or unremarkable places.

    Addressing the warming of Greenland seas, Stephen Hobson has two fine colour prints, and Todmorden artist Paul Croft particularly inspired by land patterns formed naturally by sea and sand, or manmade farmed landscape.

    Stuart Royce practices an exacting aesthetic - classic work such as the iconic Bridestones (Todmorden) taken seen on a misty day, camera ready at that moment, quality work. Then ‘Waves’ crashing on rocks - the sea looking at once a solid mass and etherial - that moment again.

    Abbas Holcroft’s ‘Rainbow over Bridestones’ and ‘Stoodley Pike’ - panoramic splicing together of several shots and a 2 metre long photograph taken overlooking Skye, the smoothest of sea. Much of the sumptuous quality of his work is through use of a Kodak silver halide metallic paper which certainly has a wow factor.

    There are some outstanding black and white works mainly by Peter Defty has square format b & w, fine toned works, part of an ongoing project based on human intervention in the environment and the process of the environment reclaiming itself, with the 13 prints representing various stages of the cycle.

    Again, the exhibitions in Water Street Gallery are curated with an emphasis on creativity and originality. Integrity, uniqueness and the qualities of the artist's expression and visual understanding are the prime criteria for our choice of work, as is work of a high artistic standard. Being an OPEN exhibition the aim is artistic inclusivity.

    This theme - Smaller and Smaller - Basically Small works as previously, but with a definite limit on size this year, nothing above 45cm. - framed. You have been warned! The aim is for a cohesive exhibition.Landscapes, illustration, portrait, urban scapes 2D, 3D, ceramics - so there is a broad spectrum of genres for your consideration. We want to fill the whole gallery with great small art.
