Charles Brown
My pots are made from red earthenware clay, predominately wheel thrown, and often with modelled or pelleted decoration. Some flatware is formed on press or hump moulds.
I am interested in functional pots that demonstrate the plastic nature of the raw material and show the hand of the maker.
My aim is to retain the spontaneity of the making in the finished pot.
I take functional English mediaeval and post-mediaeval pottery forms and methods of decoration as a starting point for developing new work, at once both contemporary and traditional in spirit.
Drawing on the varied traditions of English and Continental slipware, the pots are decorated simply, in a variety of techniques using a limited palette of coloured slips and glazes, raw glazed and once fired in a gas fuelled kiln to around 1080°C.
