Art of Summer
Though there is art that complements every season, it is art that embodies summer that captures our emotions with their hazy, dreamlike quality and palpable warmth. Summer is a season of long light filled days, surrounded by the brilliant blues of the sky and sea and permeated with crisp breezes and immense heat. Though, despite these qualities, it is rare for an artist or work to capture the very essence of summer so faithfully. Here we look to Martin Hearne’s The Venus of St Ives to see the blurred edges of reality melt into bright colours that ripple and dance with heat. The lone figure reclining in her garden overlooking the sweltering beach side town and calm sea is anything but lonely, as the scene is animated around her with light and vitality that pours from the frame. David Wiseman’s Summer River, Distant Orange along with his Rocky Beach study demonstrates the constant change and movement that is present in even the quietest of summer scenes. Centred on waterscapes, each Wiseman pieces vibrates with energy, even without the presence of human figures; abstract brush strokes and unique colours undulate with the flow of the captured water, small marks and touches create imagined insects darting about, each painting teeming with life. Calling back to soft summer evenings paired with the receding tide and fields of wildflowers closing their blooms for the short night, Christine Clarke’s Silverdale is a remarkable piece that utilises a muted colour palette to create a hazy light, reminding us of shared sunsets. Summer on the Moor by Liz Salter is a bright and expressive depiction of an open summer landscape, capturing the dancing light and soft breezes of a warm summer morning.
