Latifah A Stranack
I have always been fascinated by the story of Adam and Eve and their mysterious garden; recently, I have been researching and examining texts and artists inspired by the Edenic theme. I looked at the fresco 'The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden by the Early Renaissance artist Masaccio, the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. I also enjoy blending items from my Arab heritage, the veil and batoola mask, alongside Western streetwear brands like Adidas and Nike. Then, I juxtapose them with references from art history, like Whistler's 'Woman in white.

My mixed heritage is a source of inspiration for my paintings, and growing up between cultures has created a rich narrative for me to utilise in my work. My creative practice empowers me to explore my identity and the world around me so I can tell stories, paint and connect.
Since graduating from the RCA and Slade, I have used the Edenic theme to reflect upon my identity and question my fascination with the delicate boundaries of belonging, censorship, gender and sexuality. I enjoy creating culturally hybrid worlds using archival imagery, historical art references, fashion magazines, and photos of my body or people I know.
