Catherine Morris
Catherine’s art is largely inspired by the Yorkshire moorland landscapes close to her home as well as the seasons, sky and organic forms. The scenes she creates are often imaginary rather than literal, but she calls on experiences and images from her visual diaries and interweaves these with memories of local walks and together these produce something more abstract that conveys the essence of the place.
She has recently become fascinated with the art of collage and the ability it has to create unique colours and great depth of field by layering hand painted, thin papers and tissues. Her process begins when she creates those papers and tissues. Her aim is to create unique colours and textures in this way. She works in a part intuitive/explorative way when choosing and layering the papers. “It feels at times as if the papers ‘speak’ to me and are almost choosing themselves” she says. From this point onward she reacts to whatever begins to emerge, and the end result may be something entirely different to her starting point.
